We’re here to help

Maternal death in Australia is rare and the number of deaths has reduced over time. But tragically, healthy women in Australia do still die during pregnancy or within 42 days of the end of their pregnancy.

Maternal death occurs from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management, rather than accidental or incidental causes.

The common causes of maternal death are suicide, cardiovascular disease and sepsis. The maternal death cases our medical negligence lawyers have handled for families demonstrate that often those deaths are preventable. Studies suggest that up to one-third might be avoidable.

Australia’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is three times higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women than non-Indigenous women giving birth. The MMR is higher in regional areas and even higher again for remote and very remote parts of Australia than it is in capital cities

Taking legal action can help provide families with answers, compensation for loss and suffering and some closure. It can also help prevent further maternal deaths in Australia by forcing or highlighting the need for, changes to healthcare policies and procedures.
