Starting your holidays? You might finally be able to take some downtime to stop and think about your family and future needs (if you can escape from the chaos and frenzy of extended family and the silly season festivities).
Something important to think about this holiday break is your Estate Plan, which should be reviewed every 3-5 years, or whenever you have a significant life event. Your Estate Plan needs to reflect your relationships. That means it is directly affected by changes in your relationships and your family.
A great starting point when reviewing your Estate Plan is to ask yourself if any of the following has happened in your life this year:
- Have you been married – or remarried?
- Have you separated?
- Have you been divorced?
- Have you had a child?
- Has your adult child had a child?
- Has someone named in your will died?
- Have you got a new job or started a new business?
- Have your financial circumstances changed?
- Have the financial or life circumstances of someone mentioned in your will changed?
- Have you had a relationship breakdown or falling out?
- Has your health changed?
- Have your plans for your future changed?
- Have you retired or are you thinking about moving in the next short while to a retirement village?
Each of these life changes can have a profound effect on your Estate Plan.
This Christmas and New Year break, make a resolution to spend some time on yourself and a commitment to review your Estate Plan. It may be that your Estate Plan doesn’t need updating, but at least you can start the New Year with the peace of mind that your plan has been reviewed and reflects your wishes for your assets and family.
